The Invisible Man

February 11, 2019 - It is a challenge to discipline the dreaded, “he called me this” or “she said that.” We have come to refer to this scenario as “the invisible man,” which are offensive, hurtful or inappropriate comments made by children, when parents or teachers are not present to hear them. These remarks have a profound impact upon our students’ moods, self-esteem and peer relationships. Such comments are often one of the most challenging things for adults to discipline and prevent. It can be a difficult task for our students to learn how much weight their words truly carry.

The Impact of Media - Part 2

February 1, 2019 - In the last podcast, Mrs. Massey and Mr. Clement discussed the impact of media on families.  In this podcast we go a step further with Kirk of the Hills Senior Pastor, Ben Porter, and Covenant Seminary’s Director of Communications, Kent Needler. They share the stories, books, movies, and shows which inspire them today, draw them closer to Christ, and impact their parenting.  Both Pastor Porter and Mr. Needler are current KDS parents and graduates of Covenant Theological Seminary.

The Impact of Media - Part 1

January 28, 2019 - Today media consists of much more than TV and magazines. We are flooded with images and messages from our culture through Netflix, Hulu, Instagram, Snap Chat just to name a few. With so many options for entertainment, how do we balance using these to “unplug” and rest versus using these as platforms to numb and escape? How do we model for our kids how to discern what is ok to watch and listen to? We talk about some of the shows and entertainment that we have found life giving and some that we’ve had to turn off due to their content. We also discuss ways to make the entertainment you watch turn into meaningful conversations with your children.

Gender Issues

January 19, 2019 - Today our children are faced with so many issues.  Media exposes them to so much, and our children are being forced to ask more mature questions at younger and younger ages.  The question of, “Am I gay?” or perhaps, “Am I truly a boy or girl?” are being asked more often within the current culture.
Dr. Dan Doriani, a theologian and teacher of ethics at Covenant Seminary, offers wisdom, statistics, guidance, and Scripture on how our students are to wrestle with these topics, and how we as parents are to lead them through the confusion present in our culture.
